Junior Coaching Program

The coaches of the Westwood Swim Team are extending an invitation to any swimmer 15 years or older who would like to volunteer their time and talent to help support the team. Primary duties include supporting the Swim Coaches during 10 & Under team practices and swim meets, offering young swimmers tips to improve their swim strokes, and helping the coaches safely conduct these activities. Junior Coaches will also act in a leadership/mentoring role to foster young swimmer growth, demonstrate good sportsmanship, and strengthen the sense of community among our younger Westwood swimmers. 


Summary of Responsibilities for Jr. Coaches

The duties listed below represent the areas where you may help the Coaches and parent volunteers during the season.

 

Practices

  • Assist coaches in setting up and cleaning up the supplies necessary for daily practice (clock, kickboards, lane lines, etc.).
  • Provide extra assistance on-deck or in the pool during practice, as requested by coaches (eg. demonstration of proper stroke technique or proper executions of a practice drill).
  • Under direction from the coaches, work with an individual or small group of swimmer(s) on a specific area of weakness or skill development.
  • Encourage younger swimmers to behave in an orderly and safe manner.

 

Swim Meets

  • Report to coaches 30 minutes before start of swim meet to assist in final set-up.
  • Act as a role model for team spirit and support. CHEER!
  • Encourage younger swimmers to behave in an orderly and safe manner.
  • Clean up after meet, as needed.

 

Friday/Team Social Activities

  • Support, encourage, and recruit younger swimmers to participate in the Friday/team social activities
  • Assist (as requested) during Friday social activities and other team actvities such as Lollipop meet, Kicks for Kelly etc. 
  • Help Coaches and parent volunteers maintain order during all social activities. 

 

Jr. Coaches incentive Structure

  • This position will combine paid time and volunteer time for Junior Coaches in the 15-18 age group. The Jr Coaches will be compensated for the '10 & Under Practice' time by an hourly pay rate. Once they commit to a summer schedule, they must clock in and out for every shift in the main clubhouse. Compensation will be based on Junior Coaches' years of experience with the team. The time spent on swim meets and social activities will be a volunteer effort. 
  • For 14 year old Junior Coaches this will be a volunteer effort. They will be mentored by the 15-18 junior coaches and our senior coaching staff. 
  • All Jr. Coaches will be recognized at the Awards Banquet at the end of the season.
